Tragic Fire in Kuwait Claims Over 40 Indian Lives; India Sends MoS for Assistance

A horrific fire broke out early on Wednesday morning in a multi-storey building densely populated with foreign workers in the Mangaf area of southern Kuwait. The incident tragically claimed the lives of at least 49 people, with authorities reporting that over 40 of the deceased are Indian nationals, many hailing from the state of Kerala. Scores more were injured, several critically, due to burns and smoke inhalation. The building reportedly housed nearly 200 workers of a single company. Initial reports suggest potential violations of building codes and overcrowding might have contributed to the scale of the tragedy. Kuwaiti authorities have launched a full investigation and vowed to hold those responsible accountable. In response to the devastating news, the Indian government acted swiftly. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow and convened a high-level meeting. Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, was immediately dispatched to Kuwait to coordinate with local authorities, ensure the well-being of the injured, and facilitate the expeditious repatriation of the mortal remains of the deceased. An Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft is reportedly on standby for this purpose. The Indian embassy in Kuwait has set up helplines and is actively working to assist affected Indian nationals and their families.
