New Delhi, March 28: The Central government has officially declared April 14, the birth anniversary of Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, as a national public holiday. This decision recognizes Ambedkar’s immense contributions to Indian society and his pivotal role in drafting the Constitution of India.
Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat announced the decision on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. “The architect of the Constitution, the one who established a new era of equality in society, our revered Baba Saheb, Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Ji, will now have a public holiday on his birth anniversary," Shekhawat posted.
The move comes amidst ongoing political debates between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress regarding Ambedkar’s legacy. Shekhawat emphasized that this declaration aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to honoring Ambedkar’s principles. “By taking this decision, the devoted follower of Baba Saheb, the honorable Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji, has honored the sentiments of the nation," he added.
