Modi 3.0 Cabinet: Key Portfolios Allocated, Focus on Continuity and Coalition Management

Following the swearing-in ceremony of the third Narendra Modi-led government, the much-anticipated portfolio allocation for the 72-member council of ministers was announced. Signalling a strong emphasis on continuity in crucial areas, key portfolios remain with senior BJP leaders who held them previously. Amit Shah retains the Ministry of Home Affairs, Rajnath Singh continues as Defence Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman stays at the helm of the Finance Ministry, and S. Jaishankar continues as the External Affairs Minister. Nitin Gadkari also retains the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. This demonstrates the Prime Minister's trust in his core team for critical governance areas. However, reflecting the nature of the coalition government, significant portfolios have also been allocated to NDA allies. Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has been appointed as the Civil Aviation Minister, while Janata Dal (United)'s Lalan Singh gets the Panchayati Raj, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying ministries. Other allies like Chirag Paswan (LJP-Ram Vilas) received the Food Processing Industries ministry, and H.D. Kumaraswamy (JD-S) was given Heavy Industries and Steel. The allocation aims to balance experience, continuity, and the political compulsions of managing a coalition government as the NDA embarks on its third term.
