Vilas Hari Bhau Rupawate, born on March 16, 1967, in Parel at Wadia Hospital, is a name synonymous with compassion, perseverance, and relentless activism. He hails from the small village of Duber in the Sinnar taluka of Nashik, Maharashtra, and grew up in the bustling heart of Mumbai. His family, headed by his father Hari Bhau Yashwant Rupawate and mother Mainabai Hari Bhau Rupawate, instilled values of community service and social responsibility in him from an early age.

Vilas, affectionately known as "Vilas Bhau," has dedicated his life to uplifting the marginalized and underprivileged sections of society. His deep-rooted sense of duty towards the community is reflected in his work for the downtrodden, which began in 1995. Over the years, he has been involved in various social and political movements, always striving for justice and equality for the weaker sections of society.

In his youth, Vilas was an active participant in numerous social movements. In 1982, at just 14 years old, he was part of a long march for the cause of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s legacy and the recognition of Marathwada University. He also worked closely with the Indian Dalit Panther and was instrumental in spreading the message of equality and social justice. By the age of 24, Vilas was already known for his involvement with several prominent social organizations.

Vilas Rupawate’s activism is not limited to just one cause but spans various groups, including the Dalit, backward, and economically weaker sections of society. He is an advocate for the rights of widows, destitute women, Devdasi women, and people from marginalized communities. His significant work in these areas has earned him numerous awards, including the Lata Tai Saket Award from the Maharashtra government in 2014, a recognition for his relentless dedication to societal welfare.

Vilas's influence extends beyond activism into direct welfare activities. His office in Mata Rambai Ambedkar Nagar, Ghatkopar, becomes a beacon of hope for hundreds of elderly citizens and the poor, who are provided with food daily. Additionally, through his trust, he started a low-cost medical clinic, serving the needs of the economically disadvantaged.

One of his most notable feats was in 2008 when he organized a Diwali celebration for over 3,000 women from marginalized communities, including Devdasis, widows, and sex workers. He distributed essential items like oil, sugar, and flour to ensure they could celebrate the festival with dignity.

His involvement with social causes expanded further with initiatives such as organizing blood donation camps, HIV awareness programs, free medical camps, and support for cancer patients, among other humanitarian efforts. He even helped set up facilities for visually impaired, handicapped, and elderly people, ensuring they could lead more independent lives.

He served as the President of the Maharashtra Devdasi Women's Association and the All India Blue Tiger. His political journey saw him as a former General Secretary of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee and the Mumbai Congress Committee. Even though he faced numerous challenges, including opposition from political parties, his resolve to fight for the marginalized never faltered.

He has been a powerful voice in raising awareness about issues such as the rights of sex workers, the empowerment of women, and the eradication of societal injustices. His efforts have led to the establishment of various welfare schemes benefiting thousands of women, such as the provision of monthly financial assistance to widows and senior citizens. His fight for the rights of Devdasis and the downtrodden resulted in the Maharashtra government introducing welfare schemes under his influence.

Vilas has always been at the forefront of political activism, challenging systems that perpetuate injustice. In 2010, his organization staged an intense protest against the government for failing to meet the demands of the weaker sections. This resulted in several women-led protests across Maharashtra, and even though the protests led to arrests and violent clashes, Vilas remained undeterred.

His activism was not without personal sacrifices. In 2009, Vilas survived a horrific accident that left him severely injured. Despite suffering multiple fractures and facial injuries, he recovered quickly, driven by the overwhelming support of the people he had helped. His spirit to continue the fight for the marginalized only grew stronger after his recovery.

Vilas Rupawate’s struggles are far from over. His work continues to push for reforms aimed at providing a permanent financial safety net for widows, Devdasis, and senior citizens. His ongoing battles with the government focus on obtaining permanent financial support for the disadvantaged, including a special fund for the Devdasis, and better conditions for women workers.

His advocacy has led to the establishment of initiatives such as the Devdasi Free Marriage Scheme and the provision of monthly allowances for elderly women workers. He has even campaigned for sex workers’ legal recognition and welfare.
