Indian Premier League 2025: Season Kicks Off with Major Changes
The 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to commence today, March 22, 2025, with defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) taking on the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. The tournament will span nine weeks, culminating in the final on May 25, 2025.
Major Rule Changes
This season introduces several significant changes. Notably, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has lifted the ban on using saliva to shine the ball, a practice prohibited during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, to counteract the effects of dew during evening matches, teams can now request a ball change after the tenth over of the second innings.
Team Overhauls & Expensive Signings
The recent mega auction led to substantial team overhauls. Rishabh Pant emerged as the most expensive player, securing a ₹27 crore (approximately £2.5 million) deal with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), where he will also serve as captain. Shreyas Iyer was acquired by Punjab Kings for ₹26.75 crore. Notably, 13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi became the youngest player in IPL history, signing with the Rajasthan Royals.
RCB's New Leadership
RCB, under new captain Rajat Patidar, is considered a strong contender this season. Former player AB de Villiers praised the team's balance, highlighting the formidable opening partnership of Virat Kohli and English batsman Phil Salt. The squad also boasts a robust middle order with players like Liam Livingstone and Tim David, supported by bowlers Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
Broadcasting & Streaming Updates
In broadcasting developments, Reliance Jio will offer free streaming of IPL matches to subscribers on plans of ₹299 or more through the new JioHotstar platform. This initiative marks a shift from the previous fully free streaming model to a hybrid approach, aiming to enhance viewer engagement during the IPL season.
High-Scoring Matches & Strategic Adjustments
As the season unfolds, fans anticipate high-scoring matches, with teams aiming to surpass the 300-run mark in a single game—a milestone yet to be achieved in IPL history. The reintroduction of saliva for ball maintenance is expected to aid fast bowlers in generating reverse swing, adding a strategic dimension to the matches.
Opening Ceremony & Weather Concerns
The opening ceremony at Eden Gardens is poised to set the tone for the season, featuring performances by renowned artists. However, weather forecasts predict rain, potentially impacting the event.
Cricket enthusiasts worldwide eagerly await the action-packed season, with expectations of thrilling performances and memorable moments.
