Australia's women's cricket team showcased a dominant performance against reigning T20 World Champions New Zealand, securing an eight-wicket victory in the first of the three-match series at Eden Park.

Opting to bat first, New Zealand posted a total of 137 for 2 in their allotted 20 overs. Amelia Kerr led the charge with an unbeaten 51 off 46 balls, while captain Sophie Devine contributed a steady 39 not out. The duo accelerated in the final overs, adding 35 runs in the last three, setting a competitive target for the visitors.

In response, Australia's openers Beth Mooney and Georgia Voll delivered a record-setting partnership, amassing 123 runs—the highest T20 opening stand against New Zealand. Mooney remained unbeaten on 75 from 42 deliveries, exhibiting her trademark precision and power. Voll, the rising star, impressed with a swift 50 off 30 balls, marking her maiden international half-century.

The chase was completed emphatically in just 13.3 overs, with Australia finishing at 138 for 2. Captain Tahlia McGrath lauded Mooney's invaluable contribution, stating, "She just knows her game so well and is so reliable for us."

However, the victory was tempered by an injury concern for all-rounder Ash Gardner, who sustained a finger injury during the match and is currently undergoing scans to assess the extent, potentially impacting her availability for the remaining games.

The series continues with the second match scheduled in Tauranga on Sunday, followed by the final game in Wellington next Wednesday.
