Sea Routes Set to Ease Mumbai Traffic: Water Taxis and Ro-Ro Services Planned Across MMR
April 19, 2025
In a significant move to alleviate Mumbai's notorious traffic congestion, the Maharashtra government has announced plans to develop sea routes and introduce water taxi services across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
Ports Minister Nitesh Rane confirmed that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been prepared, identifying eight to nine routes for the proposed water taxi services.
The initiative aims to provide an alternative mode of transportation, reducing the burden on the city's overburdened road network.
In addition to water taxis, the government is also focusing on expanding Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro-Ro) ferry services. The Mora-Mumbai Ro-Ro service, which had faced delays since 2018, is now expected to commence operations by December 2025.
Furthermore, four additional Ro-Ro services are planned to connect Mumbai with Mora, Kashid, Dighi, and Revas within the next 18 months.
These developments are part of a broader strategy to enhance maritime transport infrastructure, offering commuters efficient and sustainable alternatives to road travel.
