Five Builders Default on ₹116 Crore Rent for 'Shivshahi' Housing; Vilas Rupawate Demands Action
Mumbai, April 2, 2025 – In a shocking revelation, five prominent builders in Mumbai have failed to pay rent amounting to ₹116 crore for houses under the Shivshahi Rehabilitation Project. Official reports confirm that despite using 667 units under this scheme, the builders have not cleared their dues.
What is the Shivshahi Housing Scheme?
Under the city's slum redevelopment projects, developers provide temporary accommodation to displaced slum dwellers in Shivshahi transit homes. In return, the builders are required to pay rent to the Shivshahi Rehabilitation Authority. The standard rental terms include a deposit of ₹2,000 per square foot and a monthly rent of ₹8,000 per unit.
However, despite utilizing these houses for years, five builders have collectively defaulted on ₹116 crore in rent, raising serious concerns about financial mismanagement and lack of accountability.
Lack of Action from Authorities
This massive rent default has come to light after an inquiry was conducted by officials. Shiv Sena spokesperson Vilas Rupawate has strongly criticized the authorities, questioning why no notices were issued to the builders despite the mounting dues.
“The Shivshahi authorities are aware of this massive default, yet no action has been taken against the builders. Why haven't they even issued a single notice?” – Vilas Rupawate
Will There Be Legal Action?
The exposure of this large-scale default raises serious questions about the functioning of the Shivshahi Rehabilitation Project. With crores in pending dues, the key question now is whether the government will take legal action against these defaulting builders and recover the lost public funds.
Vilas Rupawate has demanded immediate intervention and strict action against the builders involved. The ball is now in the authorities’ court—will they act, or will this financial irregularity be brushed under the carpet?
