Authoritarianism by BJP Government? Bhim Sainiks Arrested Ahead of Mahabodhi Vihar Protest
Mumbai, April 5, 2025 — In a shocking move ahead of a peaceful protest planned to liberate Mahabodhi Vihar from alleged casteist control, the police detained several key leaders and thousands of activists. Bhim Sainik leader Vilas Rupawate, labor leader Ramesh Jadhav, and numerous Bhim Sainiks were arrested before they could march from Byculla to Azad Maidan earlier today.
The arrests have sparked widespread outrage among Dalit organizations and rights activists, who accuse the BJP-led government of acting in an authoritarian manner and suppressing constitutional rights. The protest was intended to be a non-violent demonstration demanding social justice and the restoration of dignity to Mahabodhi Vihar.
Protest leaders have condemned the arrests, stating that this action is an assault on democracy and an attempt to silence the voices of the marginalized. They have warned of a nationwide movement in response to what they describe as state-sponsored oppression.
The protest was planned as a stand against the alleged caste-based interference in the religious and cultural sanctity of Mahabodhi Vihar. However, today’s crackdown has intensified concerns over civil liberties and freedom of expression.
Police officials have not yet issued an official statement regarding the detentions. Meanwhile, criticism is mounting from civil society groups and opposition parties, who say that the government's actions are a clear sign of democratic values being undermined.
